Berlin... the adult's playground
There is so much to write for Berlin, that I have taken a long time to do a first proper draft, and will likely divide it into different sections in the coming months and add more details
As well as meeting new awesome people in this party city, it has been marvellous to spend time and reconnect with already familiar faces in Ivan and Pedro, Nina, Marissa, Robbie, and the German boys Flo, Marty and Uwe
The first thing here (that is after a few days exploring Berlin and its nightlife) was find a comfortable place to rent and rest up a little bit after three months on the road. Also expanded the wardrobe for summer after adorning hiking gear since early March, and boy that was a sweet, sweet change indeed!! Highlights over first five days: craft beer festival, berlin international design festival, the turkish food here, start up events, the energetic lively creative atmosphere here. There seems to be a cool event on every few hours so it will be a busy few months! I rented in each of Kreuzberg, Neukölln and Prenzlauer Berg over three months to get a 'feel' for different areas in this massive city
Visited Uwe and Marty and their folks in Neviges, Velbert outside of Wuppertal, drinking wheat beer there and enjoying the natural beauty, then headed off to Cologne and Frankfurt where he clocked 210km on the Autobahn! He thinks he's Mark Weber! Stayed in 5 star accommodation in Frankfurt courtesy of Uwe, what awesome great timing there buddy thanks so very much!!! But he killed me at the gym the bastard. I feel bad since I got us on the wrong train to the Australia game missing two goals in the process including Cahill's screamer! Am hoping for forgiveness some day from you...
In Berlin Ivan introduced me to his love of electronica music, and the highlight of that was the weekend with Pedro in town, the Dunbar boys reunited. We partied at the Berghain until 11am including at Verandah Bar. It was without doubt the best clubbing experience I've ever experienced. A fucking insanely awesome party place for so many reasons. wow. Thank you Ivan and Pedro for such a fucking great time, not just in friedrichshain but also exploring, drinking and eaating in kreuzberg, neukölln, mitte and all over berlin. We were all living in Neukölln so it was so easy to meet up. Ivan's apartment was our hang out place to chill. Thank you guys for the great times!!
During World Cup time the football culture in Berlin was something to savour, and especially the fan mile at Brandenburg Gate was insane, it felt more like attending a series of rave parties rather than football matches. One day there was especially epic when it hailed yet everyone stayed outside enjoying the atmosphere despite no shelter from the ice missiles
The food is diverse as it gets being such an global, international city, like Sudanese, Mexican, Turkish, Lebanese (schawarma is probably my favourite food, and at only 2.50 euro for a large one you can't go wrong, brilliant!) Beer is awesome quality, cheaper than water and drinking on the streets is allowed which rocks!!
Got quite involved in the startup scene in the first month and was fortunate to hear some very interesting speakers at betahaus, co.up, Lacore Rechtsanwälte LLP and other hubs on topics spanning newer forms of digital marketing to crowd equity funding. After accepting I will not be the next big thing, attention moved from startups to the German language. Two months of intensive German in a city where everyone speaks perfect English!! What a stupid idea haha! Too late now it's done!
Other highlights were training in the Tiergarden, getting to the summer beer and culture festivals in Kreuzberg, partying in Neukolln and other parts, attending the Berlin Bienalle and Berlin International Design Festival, and the Spree including the Wall
There's just too much to write for this post, cannot do it justice. I still have to add photos with Marissa, Nina and Robbie
